Palms Student Wins Spanish Scholarship

In June 2026, Palms 7th grader Adela Benitez received a scholarship award from One Way Education for her "strong commitment to the learning and advocacy of the Spanish language."

Adela was nominated due to her rigor in learning Spanish and advocating for the language and for Latino culture.

Science Fair Awards

The Palms science team known as Panthers in STEM, participating in the UCLA Science Fair as part of The Bruin Experiment, came home with several honors:

Palms 8th grader Abigail Rison won the grand prize for Palms Middle School.

Palms 6th grader Penelope Garcia and 8th grader Arva Parikh each won a mentor pick award.

Ms. Jones Honored

In May 2026, instrumental music teacher Ms. Jessica Jones received the Outstanding Middle School Teacher Award from the Los Angeles Secondary Music Teachers Association for "outstanding dedication to music education and inspiring excellence in middle school students."

Palms Math Teams Win Competition

In March 2026, the 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade teams from the Palms Middle School Math Club each won first place in the LAUSD Region West Math Field Day. They moved on to the L.A County Board of Education Math Field Day.

Palms Student Places in Regional Spelling Bee

Arva Parikh won the annual Palms SCRIPPS Spelling Bee in January 2026, then moved on to the Region West regionals, where he placed 2nd.

Palms Featured in Youth Creating Change Flyer

Palms Middle School was featured in the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 Impact Report of the Youth Creating Change non-profit  organization, the group that sponsors the annual Directing Change Film Contest:

  • The report used three photos of Palms students, taken on the Palms campus.
  • The report links to the film named Dreams, made by Palms students Abiel Mendoza Martinez and McGreggor Roberts.

We are proud that Palms students have repeatedly won the Directing Change contest.

Gifted Magnet Recognized

The Palms Gifted/High Ability Magnet received the 2025 School of Distinction Award from Magnet Schools of America. Palms has received this award in previous years as well.

Music Students Honored

In May 2025, many instrumental music students, taught by Ms. Jones, were accepted into honors groups.

Leah Mollner was accepted into the California All-State Honor Band.

Eily Bowser, Leah Mollner, and Benji Karpoukhin were accepted into the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Honor Band

Eily Bowser, Ulyana Kurylovich, Leah Mollner, and Finn Williams were selected to perform with the Los Angeles Secondary Music Teachers Association Honor Band, with rehearsals and a concert in Huntington Park.

Laaon Choi and Chris Gurdal were selected to perform with the LAUSD Honor Orchestra at the LAUSD Arts Fest.

Instrumental Music Grant Received

Palms Middle School's instrumental music program received a grant from Save the Music.

Save the Music provides grants to hep schools  to build their in-school music education programs.

Palms Violinist Performs with Famed Cellist Yo-Yo Ma

In April 2025, Palms 7th grader Porche Brinker performed with legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma at LAUSD's musical instrument repair shop, as featured in the Oscar-winning documentary short "The Last Repair Shop."

The event was covered by the Los Angeles Times, which reported that Porche had watched videos of Ma playing cello and quoted her as saying "Now that I’ve played with professionals before, I’m a little less scared."

Students in New Palms Drone Program Win Their First Competition

In February 2025, Aerial Panthers, the Palms drone team, in its first-ever competition, won the Aerial Drone Competition for All Around Champion Middle School by the REC Foundation at Hilda Solis Senior High School in Boyle Heights.

Palms Middle School is proud to be a WASC-accredited middle school.

Two Palms Teachers Who Volunteered to Teach

Palms teachers regularly go beyond the call of duty, volunteering to help students, the school, and the local community.

Two highly qualified teachers reached retirement but continued teaching as volunteers for almost a decade: Mr. Bruce Kravets and Ms. Sylvia Kvitky. Both taught math.

Palms students benefited greatly from their dedication and years of teaching experience at Palms.
