Video Production
Video Production introduces students to the fundamentals of film and video production. Equipment used includes video cameras, iPads, and laptop computers.
Students engage in hands-on experiences as they learn the basics of film-making:
- pre-production
- production
- post-production
Students participate in every aspect of video production, from editing to directing on-screen talent, as they develop skills in
- planning
- organization
- script writing
- interpersonal communication
- team building
- media literacy
They practice shooting videos, doing sound recordings and sound engineering, and editing using iMovie. They work individually, with partners, and in collaborative groups, producing videos in various forms:
- narrative/dramatic
- informational/documentary
- promotional/persuasive
- creative/music video
Students who exhibit good citizenship can film "on location" outside of the classroom.
As a culminating event, films produced in the Video Production elective are featured in the annual Palms Film Festival.

Ways to Take the Video Production Elective
7th and 8th grade students in the Modern Media and Communications Magnet can take Video Production.
8th grade students who took Video Production in 7th grade can take Investigative Video Production in 8th grade. This is the advanced class. Studentsl learn journalistic style, news reporting, and school promotion, as reporters, news anchors, camera operators, or news editors, in studio or on location.
Students who are not in the Modern Media and Communications Magnet can take Video Production too, but space is limited.
The Video Production Lab

History
Video Production has been taught at Palms since the 2014-2015 school year.
The advanced Investigative Video Production elective was first taught in the 2024-2025 school year.
Since the beginning, Palms students have produced a number of short award-winning films, winning awards, trophies, and cash prizes from the Directing Change Film Competition.
