Positive Behavior Support Program
Palms Middle School is proud to share information regarding the Positive Behavior Support Program (PBS). PBS is a set of strategies used to increase positive student behavior and decrease problem behavior by teaching new skills and making changes in the school setting.
This is not a new program. In fact, Palms has always had a committee whose responsibility is to influence the policies which support the entire student body in discipline-related matters. They analyze data when students are referred to the Dean’s office; they discuss alternatives to suspension when students are involved in serious disciplinary matters; they discuss reward programs for improvement in behavior; they provide professional development to teachers; and they involve parents and the community to be a part of the discussion to make Palms a safe and positive place to learn.
Behavioral goals for our students
- I TREAT OTHERS THE WAY I WANT TO BE TREATED.
- I TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY ACTIONS.
- I ATTEND SCHOOL ON TIME, I HAVE MY SCHOOL BOOKS AND SUPPLIES, AND I AM PREPARED TO LEARN.

Tips for Students
Students are the most influential groups for making a safe and welcoming school climate. A school campus is a reflection of the students and staff who make up the that community. Below are several tips for students to help themselves, their school, and their school community.
- Follow school and classroom rules and encourage others to do so also.
- Read and follow A Culture of Discipline: Guiding Principles for the School Community and A Culture of Discipline: Student Expectations (see Downloads below).
- Celebrate the differences between people.
- Model respectful language and actions.
- Treat others the way you want to be treated.
- Avoid potentially dangerous situations and report unsafe, unhealthy conditions and bullying to an administrator.
- Participate in school activities. Join clubs and sports teams at school and in your community.
- Your ideas, thoughts and opinions are important and have value. Consider leadership opportunities.
- Get involved in your community. Make a difference in someone's life.
- Communicate with your parents/guardians. Let them know what is going on in your life. Always tell them where you are going and introduce them to your friends.
- Get help when you need it. Don't wait for a problem to get too big before you tell your parent/guardian or a trusted adult.
- Find a trusted adult who will mentor and support you in achieving your dreams.
- Be honest. Tell the truth. Keep your word. Act with integrity. Accept responsibility for your behavior. Hold high expectations for yourself.
- Recognize the power of language – words can hurt or words can heal. Choose wisely.
- Be proud of what you achieve. Inspire others to be their best also.
