Scripps Spelling Bee

Palms Middle School participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program. It all starts with a spelling bee at Palms, sponsored by Friends of Palms.

The winner at Palms earns $35 and represents Palms at the Regional Spelling Bee.

Palms Spelling Bee Champs, Spring 2026

  • First place: Arva Parikh, 8th grade (for the second year in a row!)
  • Second place tie: Lily Dea, 6th grade
  • Second place ti: Abigail Rison, 8th grade

Arva's winning word was grandiloquent.

Arva's winning spelling word was Acquiesce. He won $35. He went on to the Region West regional competition, where he placed 2nd!

How to Participate

Step 1: On the tryout date, get a pass from your English teacher to go to Room 45 during lunch to pick up the word list and participate in the knock-out rounds.

Step 2: Knock-out rounds: Words from the word list will be used to narrow down the contestants to the final 15 students.

Step 3: On the Spelling Bee date, go to the Auditorium during Periods 3 and 4.

The winner among the 15 contestants will receive $35 and will represent Palms at the regional spelling competition.

Palms Spelling Bee, Spring 2027

Spelling Bee tryouts will be in January 2027, at lunch in Room 45. The Spelling Bee will also be in January, during Period 3 and Period 4 in the Auditorium. In December, students will be be able to pick up a list of words from Mr. Kim in Room 45 or from Ms. Garret in Room 113.

Pratim's winning word was Pascagoula. In addition to placing first at Palms, he placed second in the regional competition!
