Prior to 2014, academic performance was measured by the Academic Performance Index (API).
In 2013, the score for Palms Middle School was an impressive 878 and Palms met its 2013 API Growth Target in all ethnic categories.
In the preceding 7 years, the Palms API Score increased by almost 100 points!

API scores were evaluated by comparing the "base" score one year to the "growth" score the following year. The growth and base scores for a given year may have differed because the state changed the formulas used from year to year. - Each year since 2011-2012, LAUSD recognized the Palms Middle School Magnet as an Excelling Magnet or an Achieving Magnet (the top 2 categories) based on the School Performance Framework (SPF). This rating combines measures of English Language Arts test scores, math test scores, rates of student attendance and suspension, and academic grown over time (AGT).
- Prior to 2011-2012, the Los Angeles Unified School District repeatedly recognized the Palms Middle School Magnet as as Model of Excellence Magnet.
- Palms' API Score rose every year from 2007 to 2013.
